Xanthogramma flavipes

FLOWER FLY FAMILY (Syrphidae)


Description

This colorful fly is 1/2 to 3/4 inch in length.  The thorax is brown with a yellow line down each side.  The abdomen is dark brown with alternating yellow and lighter brown cross-bands.  The wings are clear, the legs are yellow and the eyes are large and red.



Occurrence

The frequency of occurrence is unknown, but it is probably uncommon in summer and fall.  The individual in Photo A was photographed in Fontenelle Forest in mid-September. 



Comments
The life cycle of this fly is unknown.  There is only one species in the genus Xanthogramma in North America.
