Description
This flower fly larva is approximately 1/2 inch in length. It has a slug-like appearance and is translucent with white to cream-colored lace-like designs. There is a lengthwise white dividing line down the middle of the body. The individual shown here is likely in the genus Epistrophe.
Occurrence
The frequency of occurrence is unknown, but the individual shown here was photographed in Fontenelle Forest in late July. It can be found on plants infested with aphids.
Comments
The larvae are predators of aphids and other related species. The adults feed on nectar, pollen and the honeydew produced by aphids.
