FLOWER FLY FAMILY (Syrphidae)
Description
This Syrphid fly is approximately 1/2 inch in length. The eyes are large and dark red. In this genus the eyes of the male are closer together than the eyes of the female, but they don’t touch. The thorax is shiny brown. The abdomen is brown with tan hair on the sides. The wings are clear. This fly was identified to the genus Lejops by volunteer experts at the BugGuide website.
Occurrence
The frequency of occurrence is not known, but the individual shown here was photographed in Fontenelle Forest in mid-April. A male is shown here nectaring on Spring Beauty, one of the earliest blooming flowers in Fontenelle Forest.
Comments
There are 13 species in North America and 6 subgenera. This Lejops fly is in the subgenus Anasimyia. The larvae are aquatic.
