Description
The Shortnose Gar has the shape of a torpedo and reaches lengths of 4 feet. It is a stalker which lives in slow-moving waters of oxbows and other backwaters, It has a long, thin head, with rows of sharp teeth, but not as long and thin as the other Gar, the Longnose Gar, which is also found in Nebraska, but which is less common.
Occurrence
This Gar is probably quite common in The Great Marsh and Hidden Lake, but not often seen because of the thick vegetation. One year there were hundreds of Gar carcasses in Hidden Lake as a result of a fish kill. The most likely place to see one is looking down from the top of the Blind at the Great Marsh. .
