Description
This beetle is mostly black above with gray hairs. It is about 5/8 of an inch long. It was identified with the help of experts at Bugguide.net.
Occurrence
This beetle is very abundant in hickory trees. Thus we expect it to be common at Fontenelle Forest. This one was photographed at the Nature Center in early October. The male and females of this beetle are extremely different in appearance. The female is covered with olive yellow hair. The one in the photograph is probably a male.
Comments
This beetle belongs to the Lamiinae subfamily or flat faced longhorn beetles. These beetles are among the most injurious of all beetles. The larva of this beetle are destructive to hickory trees feeding on both the bark and wood.
