FLAMED TIGERSNAIL

Anguispira alternata

 (Discidae)

Description
This snail, with it's distinctive red shell pattern, grows to about 1/2 inch in diameter. It has a pronounced umbilicus, the central depression below (B,C). Its body, except for the "foot" is also reddish brown (A). The empty shells, as they would be found in winter, are shown at (D,E).

Occurrence
This snail is for now considered uncommon in Fontenelle Forest. The best place to look for these and other snails is the moist hollows and ravines, especially after a good rain. This specimen was photographed on moss in Handsome Hollow.
