Sphinx moths belong to the Sphingidae family of moths; there are about 250 of them in  North America. They are large, powerful fliers, some of which are mistaken for hummingbirds or bumblebees when they hover near flowers to feed on their nectar. Their caterpillars are large and most often have a "horn" on their rear end.
