There is a double white line across the lower half of the wings and white patches at the outer corners. The hindwings are a dark grayish brown. The sexes are alike in color and pattern.
Occurrence
The frequency of occurrence is unknown. The individual shown here was photographed at Fontenelle nature center in late September. Adults overwinter in leaf litter, logs and other protected places.
Comments
The Herald is in the sub-family Calpinae, known as Fruit-Piercing Moths. Their uniquely shaped proboscis allows them to pierce and eat fruit. This moth lives almost a year in the adult stage and is one of the longest lived moths. The caterpillar is bright yellow-green with a horizontal white line the length of the abdomen. The larval food plants are willow and poplar.
