The
Owlet moths are also known as
Noctuids, based on the scientific name of this
family,
Noctuidae. They are the largest moth family, with close to 3000 species in North America alone. They represent a wide variety of shapes and sizes, including the
Underwing moths, those which have drab-colored forewings, but flash colorful hindwings when taking off from rest. But there are many genera in this family which are not readily recognized by shape or color.
Erebidae is a newly named family which has been split from Noctuidae and Includes the former Noctuid subfamilies Calpinae, Catocalinae, Euteliinae, Herminiinae, Hypeninae, among others.
