WAVY-LINED ZANCLOGNATHA
Zanclognatha jacchusalis
OWLET MOTH FAMILY (Erebidae)
Description
This moth has a wingspan of approximately 1.25 inches. The male’s antennae have a distinctive “twist” of enlarged scales. The forewings and hindwings are brown with wavy black antemedial and median lines. A pale yellow subterminal line is straight and goes across both wings. The fringe is checkered on all wings.
Occurrence
The frequency of occurrence is not known. The individual shown here was photographed in early September at Fontenelle Forest Nature Center. Adults fly from May through September.
Comments
The larvae feed on dead leaves. The genus Zanclognatha is in the Litter Moths subfamily, Herminiinae.
