OWLET MOTHS (Erebidae)


Description

The Red-lined Panopoda has a wingspan of 1.50 to 1.75 inches.  The head and thorax are red.  There is a red line along the costa of the forewing. The forewing and hindwing are variably colored tan to gray to orange-brown.  Two pale yellow lines across the forewing and a pale yellow line across the hindwing are usually  edged with red.  There is a black blotch in the median line.  A row of uneven black dots mark the terminal line.  The larva grows to about 1.5 inches.  It is bright green with prominent cream subdorsal stripes.  There are many cream-colored lines and dots on the body.  The prolegs are pale yellow with red spots.



Occurrence

The frequency of occurrence is not known.  The adult shown here was photographed at Neale Woods in early July coming to artificial lights.  The caterpillar was photographed at Fontenelle Forest in early September.



Comments

The larval host plants are oaks and beech.  The species overwinters as a pupa.  There are 4 species in the genus Panopoda in North America.
