Description
The Penitent has a wingspan of 3.25 inches. The forewing is mottled brown and gray. It has brown shading in the basal area and beyond the jagged black postmedial line. An oblique whitish bar extends from the costa to the tear-drop shaped sub-reniform spot. The hindwing is orange with uneven black bands. The caterpillar is light brown with fine brown lines and small white dots. The head and the thoracic legs are red. It grows to approximately 3.5 inches.
Occurrence
The frequency of occurrence is not known. It has been seen and photographed once in Fontenelle Forest in August 2013. The adults fly from July to November.
Comments
The larvae eat the leaves of deciduous trees including ash, hickory and black walnut.
