INCONSOLABLE UNDERWING
Catocala insolabilis

Description
The Inconsolable Underwing has a wingspan of about 2.5 inches. The forewing is light gray with dark shading along the inner margin. The antemedial and postmedial lines are thin and jagged. The hindwings are almost completely black except for some white in the basal area. The hindwing fringe is very narrow and gray with white toward the apex. This moth was identified by volunteer experts at the BugGuide Website.
Occurrence
The Inconsolable Underwing is probably uncommon in this area. It has been seen at Fontenelle Forest Nature Center once in late June of 2012. Adults fly from June to August and are attracted to lights.
Comments
The pupa is formed in leaf litter. Eggs are deposited in tree bark in the fall and hatch the following spring.
