Description
The Brown Panopoda Moth has a wingspan of approximately 1.75 inches. The forewing and hindwing are brown, tinted with violet-gray. The forewing has thin brown antemedian and postmedian lines and a black orbicular dot and L-shaped reniform spot. The postmedian line continues onto the hindwing. The caterpillar is green with thin yellow diagonal lines and subdorsal stripe. The prolegs and thoracic legs are red. The head is green with dark speckles. It grows to about 1.5 inches.
Occurrence
The frequency of occurrence at Fontenelle Forest and Neale Woods is not known. One adult has been photographed at Fontenelle Forest Nature Center in late August 2013 and another in late August 2015.
Comments
The host plant is Hickory (Carya). Another common name for this moth is Hickory Panopoda.
